Frequently Asked Questions

Everything You Want to Know Before Your First Taekwondo Class in Draper

The questions we hear most often. Don’t see yours? Call us at 801-759-5300 and we’ll give you a straight answer.

What is Taekwondo?

Taekwondo is a Korean martial art known for its emphasis on fast, powerful kicking techniques, disciplined training, and character development. Rooted in five core tenets — Courtesy, Integrity, Perseverance, Self-Control, and Indomitable Spirit — it is practiced both as a sport and as a lifelong personal discipline. Our Taekwondo Classes in Draper offer structured lessons for all skill levels, guiding students through both traditional and Olympic-style training paths. Whether you are just starting out or looking to advance your skills, our Taekwondo lessons are designed to build confidence, physical fitness, and mental strength at every stage of the journey.

Is Taekwondo or Karate better?

Both are excellent martial arts with distinct strengths. Taekwondo places a stronger emphasis on dynamic kicking, athletic movement, and Olympic-style competition, while Karate focuses more on hand strikes and kata. The better choice depends on your goals. If you’re looking for a high-energy, kicking-dominant martial art with strong character development and a clear belt progression, Taekwondo classes are an outstanding fit for both kids and adults — helping students build confidence, discipline, and physical fitness from day one.

Is Taekwondo or Jiu-Jitsu better?

Taekwondo and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu serve different purposes. Taekwondo is a stand-up striking art focused on kicks, footwork, and distance management, while BJJ emphasizes ground-based grappling and submissions. Both are effective and valuable. For families looking to build confidence, discipline, fitness, and character — especially in children and teens — Taekwondo offers a structured, community-centered environment that is hard to match.

What makes Taekwondo Classes in Draper special?

Our dojang is built around more than kicking technique. From day one, students are known by name, progress through a transparent curriculum, and are held to a standard that includes character alongside physical skill. Parents consistently describe it as the activity that finally made a lasting difference in their child’s life. Adults find a practice with real depth that they can train for decades.

What are the main benefits of practicing Taekwondo?

A Taekwondo lesson develops physical fitness, coordination, and flexibility alongside mental discipline, focus, and emotional resilience. Students also gain practical self-defense awareness, improved confidence, and the ability to set and achieve meaningful goals. These benefits show up on the mat, in the classroom, and in everyday life.

What Skills Do Taekwondo Classes in Draper Focus On?

Our Taekwondo class cover a wide range of skills, including kicking techniques (front kick, roundhouse, side kick, and advanced combinations), defensive blocks, stances, poomsae (patterns and forms), kyorugi (sparring), and kyukpa (breaking). Beyond physical technique, students also build focus, self-control, respect for others, and the perseverance needed to push through challenges.

What is the difference between Olympic Taekwondo and traditional Taekwondo?

Olympic Taekwondo focuses on fast, point-scoring sparring (kyorugi) with an emphasis on head kicks, speed, and footwork — the format seen in the Olympic Games. Traditional Taekwondo emphasizes poomsae (forms), self-defense applications, and the philosophical tenets of the art. Our Taekwondo lessons cover both dimensions, giving students a well-rounded and complete foundation that develops not only athletic skill but also discipline, focus, and a deep understanding of the art.

Does Taekwondo focus more on kicks or punches?

Taekwondo is primarily a kicking-dominant art, with the majority of techniques and scoring in competition coming from kicks. Punches and hand strikes are taught as part of a complete curriculum but are secondary to the wide variety of kicks — including spinning, jumping, and combination kicks — that make Taekwondo distinctive.

How long does it take to progress through Taekwondo belts?

Progress depends on consistent training. For students attending our Taekwondo classes 3 days a week, the first color belt typically arrives within 1 year. Reaching black belt generally takes around 10 years of dedicated training. Our curriculum is transparent at every stage — you will always know exactly what is required for your next promotion in class.

What equipment or uniform do you need for Taekwondo?

New students can attend their first trial class in comfortable athletic clothing — no special equipment is needed to start. Once you enroll, you will train in a dobok (Taekwondo uniform). As you progress, protective sparring gear including a helmet, chest protector, forearm guards, shin guards, and foot protectors will be required. Our team will guide you on exactly what to get and when.

Take the First Step — Your Taekwondo Journey Begins with One Class

Whether you’re a parent searching for the activity that truly clicks for your child, an adult ready to begin something with real depth, or a teen looking for direction and a peer group worth being part of — your first class is where the rest of the journey begins.
